Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) is an empirically based 8 Phase model of treating trauma related disorders. While EMDR using the Standard Protocol has well-established positive outcomes, many clinicians find they need more therapeutic skills to engage clients fully and effectively with the methodology. Clients require skills to be able to approach difficult material, remain mindfully engaged in the process, and to re-work coping skills that are no longer effective. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can aid clients in each of these areas.
ACT has also been found to be effective in the treatment of trauma-related disorders such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression and teaches many skills in innovative ways to help clients face processing difficult emotions and past trauma while encouraging clients to behave in ways that move them closer to meaningful lived experiences.
This workshop will provide a clear rationale for combining these methodologies while teaching specific skills to mindfully bring ACT into every EMDR session, no matter what phase of the treatment model is being worked on while maintaining integrity with the Standard Protocol. For a definition of EMDR, please go to: Delphi Survey – EMDR Definition - Results from ETG Task Group 11/22/2010 (emdria.org)
Topics:
•
Defining the ACT model
• Clarifying the importance of each phase of the 8 Phase EMDR model
• Getting clear on why theoretical orientation matters
• Identifying what treatment goals are not being met by EMDR alone in your practice
• Identifying ways ACT can help to “resource” clients, keep them engaged through the use of “values” and help clients flow with difficult emotions while acting in accordance with what matters most to them
• Understanding why aiming high for more flexible thinking and acting rather than “feeling better” can serve your clients more than trying to reduce anxiety alone
• Using ACT in your own practice to ride the wave of a client’s emotions
• Describe new ways to help clients practice skills outside of the office
• Worksheets provided will include an Integrative Case Conceptualization form and ACT Congruent/Trauma focused practice sheets for clients to use between sessions
Program Objectives:
1. Identify ACT techniques to better explain and apply to clients
2. Describe one way being clear about your theoretical orientation helps you as a trauma therapist
3. Identify the 6 arms of the “hexaflex”
4. Describe 2 areas many clinicians and clients struggle with when applying EMDR.
5. Describe the difference between mindfulness and distraction and why this is vital in each phase of EMDR
6. Describe “dropping anchor” and how to practice this with clients during Phase 1 of EMDR to increase the effectiveness of “resourcing”
7. Describe the meaning of “values” in ACT and how to use clarified values in Phase 1 and 2 and beyond
8. Describe how to help clients access the “observing self” and why this is useful in clarifying “negative” and “positive” cognitions in Phase 3
9. List at least one way our own narratives about Phase 4 can affect client progress and how to defuse these narratives effectively
10. List at least 3 ways you can use ACT in EMDR sessions to improve therapist self-care and self-awareness to improve client outcomes while maintaining fidelity to the Standard Protocol (SP)
Participants working in the following fields will benefit from this training:
· Psychologists
· Social Workers
· Marriage and Family Therapists
· Professional Counselors
· Addiction Counselors
· Other Mental Health Professionals
Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced
Note: While you do not have to be certified in EMDR to take this course, it is recommended that you have basic knowledge of the 8 Phase Model and the Standard Protocol through a basic EMDR training course. This course will review basic EMDR Phases, but not the protocol itself and is NOT sufficient to practice EMDR on its own. No knowledge of ACT is necessary, but of course welcome.
Presenter Bio:
Dr. Travia has been working with clients who have experienced complex trauma for over 15 years using ACT and EMDR in a variety of settings. She spent almost 6 years treating active duty combat veterans in a military partial hospital setting, eventually leading the combat trauma “track” at that facility. While there, she maintained a small private practice focused on treating trauma before leaving 4+ years ago for full time private work. She has been trained in Prolonged Exposure, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Graphic Narrative, ART, and EMDR and found that EMDR was by far the most well-tolerated and effective modality for the most complex clients. Using ACT with EMDR for the majority of clients has been a natural combination which she believes has helped clients heal more fully. ACT is also a methodology that encouraged good self-care and practicing what one teaches.
When she isn’t taking trainings, writing courses, and practicing therapy, she’s likely to be found playing cooperative board games with friends, attending theater productions, or SCUBA diving in port from a cruise ship.
